Difference between car hire from Swiss sector and French sector of the airport

Collecting from the Swiss Sector
Collecting from the Swiss side is much quicker as international flights arrive in the Swiss Sector
Existing Geneva to the Alpes is better indicated.
Swiss cars come mandatory equipped with winter tyres and chains – essential if you hit bad weather.
Prices are a little more expensive
Collecting from the French Sector
Rates can be a little cheaper but be aware!!!
You will arrive in the Swiss sector so you have to go back through customs to get to the French sector.
You could be charged extra for winter tyres or chains.
Departing the airport is not to difficult but returning you car to the French sector can be complicated.
Return of the car
If returning to the Swiss sector you can use the French and Swiss motorway which takes you directly to the airport terminal.
If returning to the French sector this will take about an extra 40 minutes.
If you return to the French side you will be give a detailed map how to return the car. You do not follow signs for the airport but must go through the centre of Geneva which avoids using the Swiss motorways.
If you take a wrong turn and find yourself on the Swiss motorway with a French Sector car you could be charged a 12 month fee approx 50 pounds for a 5 minute journey.

Skiing is my passion and like many skiers I collect my car hire from Geneva airport.
Throughout the years I have tried most brokers and gone directly with the top names. Only to find that on arrival the quote I received and booked on line with full insurance does not seem to be the same as the agreement I am asked to sign.

After an early morning start with 2 young children, my wife, luggage and a queue starting to form I am stood at the car hire desk. I can see that the car hire representative is enjoying this much more than I am, with his well drilled response.
Finally I have to make a quick decision, I had booked with full insurance, but now I am being offered theft protection, excess waiver, top-up excess waiver, personal accident insurance…….
I’ve no where to go as they have my credit card from when I
made the reservation - do I take the risk of third party insurance, leave the theft cover or take all the extra costs?
If I had known all the costs before, its a decision I would usually draw out for 2 or 3 days while collecting prices but now have I to make a call in a couple of seconds and no calculator at hand.
The queue forming behind me is getting agitated. Finally I sign on the dotted line and pay the added charges of delivering the car, road tax, upgrading my full insurance and adding theft waiver - the price of my car hire had now doubled !!!
